It basically revolved around the lives of four women who live together in the same house, more often than not they are vexed with each other, but underlying this badgering is their deep bond of friendship which is heartwarming The serial was groundbreaking in ways more than one. It dealt with some sensitive issues of the society. Besides the base of the storyline was ingenious enough, as it was based on the lives for four women into their 50s but they feel far from that and actually consider themselves Diva's.

The sitcom was conceptualized by Brandon Tartikoff, an NBC executive and Susan Harris was responsible for executing this idea. The idea came to Brandon's mind in a very interesting way. He had actually gone to see his aunt and their met with her next door neighbor and friend. The relationship of these women was strong and dedicated though their conversations were often laced with sarcasm and continuous heckling.

However underlying this jeering was a strong and emotional bond of friendship.

The first episode of the show was named the engagement and shows how Dorothy's mother Sophia's entry in the serial. Sophia's character was the best loved among all the Golden Girls episodes because of her lack of tact both in her actions and her words. She often embarrasses her daughter Dorothy.

Tartikoff recognized the potential behind the story and decided to spin it into a series and the rest is history. It turned out to be the funniest and the best loved sitcoms ever.
